Anderson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 76,978. Its county seat is Clinton. Anderson County is included in the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History[edit]
Anderson County was formed on November 6, 1801, from parts of Knox and Grainger counties. It was named in honor of Joseph Anderson, a prominent U.S. senator and judge from Tennessee.
During the American Civil War, the county was divided, with residents supporting both the Union and the Confederacy. The Clinch River runs through the county, providing a strategic location for both sides.
Geography[edit]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 345 square miles (890 km²), of which 337 square miles (870 km²) is land and 8.0 square miles (21 km²) (2.3%) is water. The county is part of the Appalachian Mountains and features a mix of mountainous terrain and river valleys.

As of the 2020 census, there were 76,978 people, 31,848 households, and 21,345 families residing in the county. The population density was 228 people per square mile (88/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with smaller percentages of African American, Native American, Asian, and other races.

The economy of Anderson County is diverse, with significant contributions from manufacturing, healthcare, and retail sectors. The presence of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge has a substantial impact on the local economy, providing numerous jobs and fostering technological advancements.

Anderson County is served by several public school districts, including the Anderson County Schools and the Oak Ridge Schools. Higher education institutions in the area include Roane State Community College and nearby University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
