McMinn County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 53,794. Its county seat is Athens. The county is named after Joseph McMinn, a governor of Tennessee.

History

McMinn County was established in 1819. It was named in honor of Joseph McMinn, who served as the governor of Tennessee from 1815 to 1821. The county has a rich history, including its involvement in the American Civil War and the Battle of Athens in 1946, which was a significant event in the fight against political corruption.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 432 square miles (1,120 km²), of which 430 square miles (1,100 km²) is land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²) (0.5%) is water. The county is part of the Appalachian region, characterized by its rolling hills and valleys.
