Putnam County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 79,954. Its county seat and largest city is Cookeville. The county was founded on February 2, 1854, and named in honor of Israel Putnam, a hero of the French and Indian War and a general in the American Revolutionary War.
History[edit]
Putnam County was established on February 2, 1854, from parts of Jackson, Overton, Fentress, White, and DeKalb counties. The county is named after Israel Putnam, a notable figure in early American history.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 403 square miles (1,040 km²), of which 401 square miles (1,040 km²) is land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²) (0.5%) is water.

As of the 2020 census, there were 79,954 people, 30,000 households, and 20,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 199 people per square mile (77/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 90% White, 4% Black or African American, 1% Native American, 2% Asian, and 3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5% of the population.

Putnam County is served by the Putnam County School District, which includes several elementary, middle, and high schools. The county is also home to Tennessee Technological University, a public university located in Cookeville.
