Cumberland County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 61,407. Its county seat is Crossville. The county was established in 1856 and named for the Cumberland Mountains.

History[edit]

Cumberland County was formed in 1856 from parts of Bledsoe, Fentress, Morgan, Putnam, Rhea, Roane, and White counties. The county is named after the Cumberland Mountains, which are part of the larger Appalachian Mountains.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 685 square miles (1,770 km²), of which 681 square miles (1,760 km²) is land and 4.1 square miles (11 km²) (0.6%) is water.

As of the 2020 census, there were 61,407 people, 25,553 households, and 17,567 families residing in the county. The population density was 90 people per square mile (35/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.2% White, 0.8% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.5% Asian, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.1% of the population.
