Neurology (from Greek: νεῦρον (neûron) , "string, nerve" and the suffix -logia, "study of") is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of conditions and disease involving the central and peripheral nervous systems (and their subdivisions, the autonomic and somatic nervous systems), including their coverings, blood vessels, and all effector tissue, such as muscle.

Scope[edit]

A large number of neurological disorders have been described as listed. These can affect the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), the peripheral nervous system, the autonomic nervous system, and the muscular system.

Nervous system[edit]

The nervous system is a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that plays a vital role in controlling the body's functions and behaviors. It consists of the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), which consists of nerves that extend from the CNS to the rest of the body.

Common conditions[edit]

Some common neurological conditions that neurologists treat include stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and brain injury and spinal cord injuries. They may also treat headaches, movement disorders, and nerve and muscle disorders.

Treatments[edit]

Treatment for neurological conditions may involve medication, physical therapy, occupational therapy, or surgery. In some cases, a combination of these approaches may be used.

Advances[edit]

Neurology is a rapidly advancing field, and new treatments and therapies are being developed all the time.

Research[edit]

Research in neurology plays a vital role in improving the lives of people with neurological conditions and in developing new ways to diagnose and treat these conditions.

Seek immediate help[edit]

If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms that may be related to a neurological condition, it is important to see a healthcare professional for a proper evaluation and treatment.

Neurologist[edit]

A neurologist or other medical specialist can help determine the underlying cause of the symptoms and develop a plan to manage them effectively. They use a variety of diagnostic tools and techniques, including imaging tests such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans, as well as electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) to evaluate the function of the nervous system.
