Beevor's Axiom (pronounced: /ˈbiːvər/ /ˈæksiəm/) is a medical principle named after the British neurologist Charles Edward Beevor.

Etymology

The term "Beevor's Axiom" is derived from the name of its discoverer, Charles Edward Beevor, who was a prominent neurologist in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The word "axiom" is derived from the Greek word "ἀξίωμα" (axioma), which means "that which is thought worthy or fit" or "that which commends itself as evident."

Definition

Beevor's Axiom refers to the principle that the upper part of the abdominal muscles moves towards the side of the lesion in a spinal cord injury. This principle is used to help locate the level of a spinal cord lesion based on the movement of the abdominal muscles during respiration or coughing.
