Neurotology
Neurotology (pronounced: /ˌnʊəroʊˈtɒlədʒi/) is a branch of medicine and otolaryngology that focuses on diseases of the ear and cranial nerves.
Etymology
The term "Neurotology" is derived from the Greek words "neuron" meaning nerve and "otology" which comes from "oto" meaning ear and "logia" meaning study. Thus, Neurotology literally means the study of nerves related to the ear.
Overview
Neurotology is a subspecialty of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery that focuses on the pathologies of the ear and related structures. This includes the management of diseases, disorders, and conditions such as hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness, infectious and inflammatory diseases of the ear, facial nerve disorders, congenital malformations of the ear, and tumors of the ear and skull base.
