Neural Engineering

Neural engineering (pronounced: /ˈnʊərəl ˌɛndʒɪˈnɪərɪŋ/), also known as neuroengineering, is a discipline within biomedical engineering that uses engineering techniques to understand, repair, replace, enhance, or otherwise exploit the properties of neural systems. The term neural engineering is both broad and specific, referring to a wide range of applications from theoretical to practical.

Etymology

The term "neural" is derived from the Latin word "neuralis," which means "pertaining to the nerves." The term "engineering" comes from the Latin word "ingenium," meaning "cleverness" and "ingeniare," meaning "to contrive, devise." Thus, neural engineering can be understood as the clever devising of solutions pertaining to the nerves or the nervous system.
