American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology
American professional organization for certification in psychiatry and neurology
The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) is a professional organization that certifies physicians in the fields of psychiatry and neurology. It is one of the 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).
History
The ABPN was established in 1934 to provide a standardized process for the certification of psychiatrists and neurologists. The board was created in response to the growing need for a formalized system to ensure the competence of specialists in these fields. Over the years, the ABPN has evolved to include subspecialties and to adapt to changes in medical education and practice.
Certification Process
The certification process for the ABPN involves several steps. Candidates must first complete an accredited residency program in psychiatry or neurology. Following residency, they must pass a written examination that tests their knowledge and skills in their specialty. For some subspecialties, an oral examination may also be required.
The ABPN offers certification in the following areas:
- Psychiatry
- Neurology
- Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
- Clinical Neurophysiology
- Forensic Psychiatry
- Geriatric Psychiatry
- Neurodevelopmental Disabilities
- Neuromuscular Medicine
- Pain Medicine
- Sleep Medicine
Maintenance of Certification
The ABPN requires that diplomates participate in a Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. This program is designed to ensure that physicians continue to meet the standards of their specialty throughout their careers. The MOC program includes components such as:
- Professional standing
- Lifelong learning and self-assessment
- Cognitive expertise
- Performance in practice
Role and Impact
The ABPN plays a crucial role in maintaining the standards of practice in psychiatry and neurology. By certifying specialists, the board helps to ensure that patients receive care from qualified professionals. The ABPN also contributes to the advancement of these fields by setting educational standards and promoting research and innovation.
