PDGFB
PDGFB (Platelet-derived growth factor subunit B) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the PDGFB gene. It is a member of the platelet-derived growth factor family. The four members of this family are mitogenic factors for cells of mesenchymal origin and are characterized by a core motif of eight cysteine residues.
Function[edit]
The PDGFB gene product can exist either as a homodimer (PDGF-BB) or as a heterodimer with the platelet-derived growth factor alpha polypeptide (PDGF-AB). These two forms function as growth factors that stimulate the proliferation of cells of mesenchymal origin, including fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, and glial cells.
Clinical significance[edit]
Mutations in this gene are associated with idiopathic basal ganglia calcification and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. Overexpression of PDGFB has been observed in certain tumors such as astrocytomas and glioblastoma multiforme.
