FGF18

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

FGF18 is a member of the Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) family, which is involved in a variety of biological processes. The FGF family consists of at least 22 known members, all of which are structurally related signaling molecules. FGF18, specifically, plays a crucial role in the regulation of cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth, and invasion.

Structure

FGF18 is a protein that is encoded by the FGF18 gene in humans. The protein is approximately 207 amino acids in length. Like other members of the FGF family, FGF18 has a core FGF domain that is responsible for its biological activity. This domain is composed of 12 antiparallel beta strands that form a beta barrel structure.

Function

FGF18 is involved in a variety of biological processes. It is a key regulator of cell growth and differentiation, and it plays a crucial role in the development of various tissues, including the nervous system, skeletal system, and cardiovascular system. FGF18 is also involved in wound healing and tissue repair, as it promotes the proliferation and migration of cells at the site of injury.

In addition to its role in normal physiological processes, FGF18 has been implicated in several pathological conditions. For example, overexpression of FGF18 has been observed in various types of cancer, including breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and lung cancer. This overexpression is thought to promote tumor growth and invasion by stimulating cell proliferation and angiogenesis.

Clinical significance

Given its role in cell growth and differentiation, FGF18 is a potential target for therapeutic intervention in various diseases. For example, inhibitors of FGF18 could potentially be used to treat cancers that are characterized by overexpression of this growth factor. Conversely, FGF18 could potentially be used to promote tissue repair and regeneration in conditions such as chronic wounds or degenerative diseases.
