Renal disease (pronunciation: /ˈriːnəl dɪˈziːz/), also known as Kidney Disease, is a broad term used to describe any disease or disorder that affects the function of the kidneys.

Etymology

The term "renal" comes from the Latin word "renes", meaning kidneys. The term "disease" originates from the Old French "desaise", meaning lack of ease.

Definition

Renal disease refers to conditions that affect the structure and function of the kidneys. These diseases can affect the kidneys' ability to filter waste and toxins from the blood, maintain the body's fluid and electrolyte balance, regulate blood pressure, and produce red blood cells.

Types of Renal Disease

There are several types of renal disease, including:

  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): A long-term condition where the kidneys don't work as well as they should.
  • Acute Kidney Injury (AKI): A sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days.
  • Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD): A genetic disorder characterized by the growth of numerous cysts in the kidneys.
  • Glomerulonephritis: A type of kidney disease in which the body's immune system attacks the part of the kidney that filters blood.
  • Kidney Stones: Hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside your kidneys.

Symptoms

Symptoms of renal disease can vary depending on the type and stage of the disease. Common symptoms include:

  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Changes in the amount and frequency of urination
  • Swelling in the feet and ankles
  • Persistent itching
  • Chest pain

Treatment

Treatment for renal disease depends on the underlying cause and may include medications, lifestyle changes, dialysis, or in severe cases, Kidney Transplant.
