Blood tests
Blood tests
Blood tests (/blʌd tɛsts/) are laboratory examinations performed on a blood sample that are used to determine physiological and biochemical states, such as disease, mineral content, pharmaceutical drug effectiveness, and organ function.
Etymology
The term "blood test" is derived from the English words "blood" and "test". "Blood" comes from the Old English "blod", and "test" comes from the Old French "test", meaning "small vessel".
Types of Blood Tests
There are several types of blood tests, including:
- Complete blood count (CBC)
- Blood chemistry tests / Biochemical profile
- Blood enzyme tests
- Blood tests to assess heart disease risk
- Blood clotting tests
Complete Blood Count
A Complete blood count (CBC) is a blood test used to evaluate your overall health and detect a wide range of disorders, including anemia, infection and leukemia.
Blood Chemistry Tests
Blood chemistry tests or Biochemical profile are a group of tests that measure different chemicals in the blood. These tests usually are performed on the fluid part of the blood to determine how well certain organs are functioning.
Blood Enzyme Tests
Blood enzyme tests are used to measure specific enzymes in the blood. High levels of certain enzymes can indicate a problem with a particular organ or system in the body.
Blood Tests to Assess Heart Disease Risk
Blood tests to assess heart disease risk are used to determine the levels of certain fats, cholesterol, sugar, and proteins in your blood. High levels can show that you're at risk for heart disease.
Blood Clotting Tests
Blood clotting tests, also known as coagulation panel, are used to determine how well the blood clotting process is working. These tests can help diagnose blood clotting disorders and assess the risk of excessive bleeding or clotting.
