MacOS Big Sur
macOS Big Sur is the seventeenth major release of macOS, Apple Inc.'s operating system for Macintosh computers. It was announced at WWDC 2020 on June 22, 2020, and was released to the public on November 12, 2020. macOS Big Sur is notable for being the first version of macOS to support both Intel-based and Apple silicon-based Macs.
Features
macOS Big Sur introduced a major redesign of the user interface, bringing it closer to the design language of iOS and iPadOS. Key features include:
- **Control Center**: A new Control Center similar to that found in iOS, providing quick access to system controls.
- **Notification Center**: Redesigned to include more interactive notifications and a new widget system.
- **Safari**: Enhanced performance, improved privacy features, and a customizable start page.
- **Messages**: New features such as pinned conversations, inline replies, and message effects.
- **Maps**: Updated with new features like indoor maps, guides, and improved navigation.
Compatibility
macOS Big Sur is compatible with the following Mac models:
- MacBook (2015 and later)
- MacBook Air (2013 and later)
- MacBook Pro (Late 2013 and later)
- Mac mini (2014 and later)
- iMac (2014 and later)
- iMac Pro (2017 and later)
- Mac Pro (2013 and later)
Development
macOS Big Sur marks the transition from Intel processors to Apple silicon, starting with the Apple M1 chip. This transition is expected to take about two years, during which time Apple will continue to support Intel-based Macs.
Reception
macOS Big Sur received generally positive reviews for its design overhaul and performance improvements. However, some users reported issues with the initial release, including installation problems and compatibility issues with certain third-party applications.
