Mac OS X Tiger (version 10.4) is the fifth major release of macOS, Apple Inc.'s desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers. It was released to the public on April 29, 2005, for a price of $129.95. Mac OS X Tiger was a significant update that introduced a number of new features and improvements over its predecessor, Mac OS X Panther.

Features

Mac OS X Tiger introduced several new features and enhancements, including:

  • Spotlight: A powerful desktop search technology that allows users to quickly find files, emails, contacts, and other information on their Mac.
  • Dashboard: A secondary desktop environment for hosting mini-applications known as widgets.
  • Safari 2: The updated version of Apple's web browser, which included a built-in RSS reader.
  • Automator: A new application designed to create automated workflows for repetitive tasks.

System Requirements

Mac OS X Tiger required a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor, 256 MB of RAM, and 3 GB of available hard disk space. It was the last version of macOS to support the PowerPC architecture before the transition to Intel processors.

Development and Release

Mac OS X Tiger was announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2004 and was released to the public on April 29, 2005. It was well-received by critics and users alike for its performance improvements and new features.

Legacy

Mac OS X Tiger was succeeded by Mac OS X Leopard (version 10.5) on October 26, 2007. Despite being succeeded by newer versions, Tiger remained popular among users with older hardware due to its stability and performance.
