Photos is a digital photograph manipulation and management application developed by Apple Inc. for its macOS and iOS operating systems. It was first introduced in 2015 as a replacement for iPhoto and Aperture. The application is designed to help users organize, edit, and share their photos across all Apple devices.

Features[edit]

Photos offers a variety of features that cater to both amateur and professional photographers. Some of the key features include:

Organization[edit]

Photos automatically organizes images into "Moments," "Collections," and "Years," using metadata such as time and location. Users can also create custom albums and use the "People" feature to group photos by recognized faces.

The application includes a range of editing tools that allow users to enhance their photos. These tools include auto-enhance, filters, cropping, and adjustments for light, color, and black & white. Advanced editing features such as noise reduction and selective color adjustments are also available.

iCloud Integration[edit]

Photos is integrated with iCloud, allowing users to store their entire photo library in the cloud. This enables seamless access to photos and videos across all Apple devices. The "iCloud Photo Library" feature ensures that any changes made to photos are updated across all devices.

Sharing[edit]

Photos provides several options for sharing images. Users can share photos via AirDrop, iMessage, Mail, and social media platforms. The "Shared Albums" feature allows users to create albums that can be shared with other iCloud users.

Compatibility[edit]

Photos is compatible with a wide range of image formats, including JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and RAW. It supports video formats such as HEVC, H.264, and MPEG-4.

History[edit]

Photos was announced at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2014 and released in April 2015 as part of the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 update. It was designed to replace iPhoto and Aperture, which were discontinued by Apple.
