macOS High Sierra is the fourteenth major release of macOS, Apple Inc.'s desktop operating system for Macintosh computers. It was announced at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 5, 2017, and was released to the public on September 25, 2017. The name "High Sierra" refers to the High Sierra region in California.

Features

macOS High Sierra introduced several new features and improvements over its predecessor, macOS Sierra.

Apple File System (APFS)

One of the most significant changes in macOS High Sierra is the introduction of the Apple File System (APFS), which replaces the HFS+ file system. APFS is optimized for solid-state drives (SSDs) and offers improved performance, security, and reliability.

Graphics and VR

High Sierra includes support for Metal 2, Apple's graphics API, which provides better performance and new capabilities for developers. It also adds support for virtual reality (VR) and external GPUs, enabling more powerful graphics performance and VR experiences.

Photos

The Photos app in macOS High Sierra received several updates, including new editing tools, improved organization, and better integration with third-party apps.

Safari

The Safari web browser in High Sierra includes new features such as Intelligent Tracking Prevention, which uses machine learning to block tracking by advertisers, and Autoplay Blocking, which prevents media from autoplaying on websites.

Mail

The Mail app in High Sierra offers improved search capabilities and a new feature called "Top Hits," which highlights the most relevant search results.

Other Improvements

Other notable improvements in macOS High Sierra include updates to the Notes app, the addition of the HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) video compression standard, and support for the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) image format.
