Jony Ive

Jony Ive (born February 27, 1967) is a British industrial designer. He is best known for his work at Apple, where he served as the Chief Design Officer (CDO) from 2015 to 2019. Ive's designs have significantly influenced the look and feel of many Apple products, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch.

Early life and education

Ive was born in Chingford, London. He studied industrial design at Newcastle Polytechnic, now known as Northumbria University. His passion for design was influenced by his father, a silversmith who also lectured at Middlesex Polytechnic.

Career

Apple Inc.

Ive joined Apple in 1992 and became the Senior Vice President of Industrial Design in 1997. During his tenure, he led the design team responsible for many iconic Apple products. His first major project was the iMac, which was noted for its distinctive translucent plastic casing.

Ive's design philosophy is characterized by a minimalist aesthetic and an emphasis on user experience. His work on the iPhone, in particular, has been credited with revolutionizing the smartphone industry.

In 2015, Ive was promoted to Chief Design Officer, a newly created position that allowed him to oversee all design at Apple, including the look and feel of Apple retail stores and the new Apple Park campus.

Ive announced his departure from Apple in June 2019 to start his own design firm, LoveFrom, with Apple as its first client.

Awards and recognition

Ive has received numerous awards for his design work, including being knighted in the 2012 New Year Honours for services to design and enterprise. In 2013, he was awarded the Design Museum's Design of the Year award for his work on the iPhone 6.

Personal life

Ive lives in San Francisco, California, with his wife and two children. He is known for his love of cars and has a collection of vintage sports cars.
