Akamai Technologies
American content delivery network and cloud service company
Akamai Technologies, Inc. is an American content delivery network (CDN), cybersecurity, and cloud service company, providing web and Internet security services. Akamai's intelligent edge platform is one of the world's largest distributed computing platforms, responsible for serving between 15% and 30% of all web traffic.
History
Akamai Technologies was founded in 1998 by Daniel M. Lewin and Tom Leighton, along with Preetish Nijhawan, Jonathan Seelig, and Randall Kaplan. The company was established to commercialize the research conducted by Leighton and Lewin at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on algorithms for efficiently delivering content over the Internet.
Services
Akamai provides a range of services designed to improve the speed, reliability, and security of Internet applications. These services include:
- Content Delivery Network (CDN): Akamai's CDN services help deliver content quickly and efficiently by caching it on servers located close to end-users.
- Web and Mobile Performance: Solutions to optimize the performance of websites and mobile applications.
- Cloud Security: Services to protect websites and applications from cyber attacks, including DDoS protection and web application firewalls.
- Enterprise Access: Secure access solutions for remote and mobile workforces.
Technology
Akamai's platform is built on a distributed network of servers, known as the "Akamai Intelligent Edge Platform." This network is designed to deliver content and applications quickly and securely by caching data at the "edge" of the Internet, closer to users.
Headquarters
Akamai's headquarters is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company has offices and data centers around the world to support its global operations.
Operations
Akamai operates a network of over 240,000 servers in more than 130 countries. This extensive infrastructure allows Akamai to deliver content and services with high availability and low latency.
