Nancy R. Heinen

Nancy R. Heinen is an American attorney and corporate executive, best known for her tenure as the Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary of Apple from 1997 to 2006. She played a significant role in many of Apple's pivotal moments, including the return of Steve Jobs to the company.

Early Life and Education

Nancy R. Heinen was born and raised in the United States. She pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and later attended the Stanford University Law School, where she earned her Juris Doctor degree.

Career

Heinen began her career in the legal field, working for several law firms before transitioning to the tech industry. She joined NeXT in 1988, a computer and software company founded by Steve Jobs after his initial departure from Apple. At NeXT, Heinen served as the Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary.

In 1997, following Apple's acquisition of NeXT, Heinen returned to Apple with Jobs. As the Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary, she was responsible for all of Apple's legal affairs. Her tenure at Apple was marked by significant growth and innovation for the company, including the launch of iconic products like the iPod and iPhone.

Heinen left Apple in 2006. In 2007, she was implicated in a controversy over the backdating of executive stock options at Apple, which led to a legal dispute with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The case was settled in 2010.

Personal Life

Heinen is known for her philanthropic efforts, particularly in the field of education. She is a trustee of the Nueva School, a private school known for its gifted education program.
