Mac OS X Panther (version 10.3) is the fourth major release of macOS, Apple Inc.'s desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers. It was released on October 24, 2003, and was the successor to Mac OS X Jaguar (version 10.2). Panther was succeeded by Mac OS X Tiger (version 10.4) on April 29, 2005.

New Features[edit]

Mac OS X Panther introduced several new features and improvements over its predecessor:

  • Finder: The Finder was significantly improved with a new brushed-metal interface, a new sidebar for quick access to frequently used folders and volumes, and improved search capabilities.
  • Exposé: A new window management feature that allows users to quickly see all open windows, all windows of the current application, or the desktop.
  • FileVault: A new security feature that uses XTS-AES-128 encryption to protect the user's home directory.
  • Fast User Switching: Allows multiple users to be logged in simultaneously and switch between them without logging out.
  • Safari: Panther was the first version of Mac OS X to include Safari as the default web browser.
  • iChat AV: An updated version of iChat that includes support for audio and video conferencing.
  • Preview: Enhanced with the ability to view and annotate PDF files.
  • Xcode: The introduction of Xcode, Apple's integrated development environment (IDE) for macOS.

System Requirements[edit]

The minimum system requirements for Mac OS X Panther are:

  • A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
  • 128 MB of RAM (256 MB recommended)
  • 1.5 GB of available hard disk space
