Angiostrongyliasis (pronounced: an-gee-oh-strong-guy-li-uh-sis) is a disease caused by the parasitic roundworms of the genus Angiostrongylus. The most common types of this disease are caused by Angiostrongylus cantonensis and Angiostrongylus costaricensis.

Etymology

The term "Angiostrongyliasis" is derived from the Greek words "angeion" (meaning vessel), "strongylos" (meaning round), and "iasis" (meaning condition). It refers to the condition caused by roundworms that inhabit the blood vessels of their hosts.

Causes

Angiostrongyliasis is caused by the ingestion of food or water contaminated with the larvae of Angiostrongylus roundworms. The larvae mature into adult worms in the human body, often in the blood vessels of the lungs or intestines.

Symptoms

The symptoms of angiostrongyliasis can vary depending on the species of Angiostrongylus causing the infection. Symptoms may include headache, neck stiffness, fever, nausea, vomiting, and neurological abnormalities.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of angiostrongyliasis is typically made through a combination of clinical symptoms, epidemiological information, and laboratory tests. Laboratory tests may include examination of cerebrospinal fluid or stool samples for the presence of Angiostrongylus larvae.

Treatment

Treatment for angiostrongyliasis typically involves the use of anthelmintic drugs to kill the adult worms and larvae. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to remove the worms.

Prevention

Prevention of angiostrongyliasis primarily involves avoiding the ingestion of contaminated food or water. This can be achieved through proper food handling and preparation practices, as well as the use of safe water sources.
