iOS 12 is the twelfth major release of the iOS mobile operating system developed by Apple Inc. It was announced at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 4, 2018, and was released to the public on September 17, 2018. iOS 12 is the successor to iOS 11 and was succeeded by iOS 13 on September 19, 2019.

Features[edit]

iOS 12 introduced several new features and improvements over its predecessor, focusing on performance enhancements, new functionalities, and user experience improvements.

Performance[edit]

One of the primary goals of iOS 12 was to improve the performance of iOS devices, particularly older models. Apple claimed that iOS 12 would make devices faster and more responsive, with improvements in app launch times, keyboard display, and camera access.

Screen Time[edit]

iOS 12 introduced Screen Time, a feature that provides users with detailed information and tools to manage the time they spend on their devices. Screen Time includes activity reports, app usage statistics, and the ability to set time limits for specific apps.

Notifications[edit]

The notification system was overhauled in iOS 12, introducing grouped notifications to reduce clutter on the lock screen. Users can manage notifications directly from the lock screen and use the "Instant Tuning" feature to adjust notification settings for specific apps.

Augmented Reality[edit]

iOS 12 included improvements to ARKit, Apple's augmented reality platform. ARKit 2 introduced shared experiences, allowing multiple users to interact with the same AR environment. It also added support for persistent AR experiences and object detection.

Siri Shortcuts[edit]

Siri, Apple's virtual assistant, received significant updates in iOS 12. The new Siri Shortcuts feature allows users to create custom voice commands to trigger specific actions within apps. Siri can also suggest shortcuts based on user behavior.

Photos[edit]

The Photos app in iOS 12 introduced new features such as improved search functionality, sharing suggestions, and a "For You" tab that curates memories and featured photos.

Measure App[edit]

iOS 12 included a new app called Measure, which uses augmented reality to measure objects and spaces in the real world.

Privacy and Security[edit]

iOS 12 included several privacy and security enhancements, such as improved tracking prevention in Safari and automatic strong password suggestions.

Compatibility[edit]

iOS 12 is compatible with the following devices:

Reception[edit]

iOS 12 received generally positive reviews, with praise for its performance improvements and new features. The focus on enhancing the user experience on older devices was particularly well-received.
