Eskalith

Eskalith (/ɛsˈkælɪθ/), also known as Lithium Carbonate, is a type of medication primarily used to treat bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. It is also used to decrease the intensity and frequency of mania in bipolar disorder.

Etymology

The term "Eskalith" is a brand name derived from the generic name "Lithium Carbonate". The word "Lithium" comes from the Greek word "lithos", meaning stone, as lithium was first discovered in mineral form. The term "Carbonate" refers to the type of chemical compound that lithium is combined with in this medication.

Usage

Eskalith is used to treat manic episodes related to bipolar disorder. It can help reduce the severity and frequency of mania, which may include feelings of exaggerated self-importance, racing thoughts, and rapid, excessive talking. It is also used to treat major depressive disorder when other treatments have not been effective.
