Ezetimibe/simvastatin
Ezetimibe/simvastatin
Ezetimibe/simvastatin (pronunciation: eh-zet-ih-mibe/sim-va-stat-in) is a medication used in the treatment of high cholesterol. It is a combination of two drugs, ezetimibe and simvastatin, which work together to lower the levels of "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL) and raise the levels of "good" cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL) in the blood.
Etymology
The name "ezetimibe" is derived from the chemical name of the drug, which is (3R,4S)-1-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-[(3S)-3-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-hydroxypropyl]-4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)azetidin-2-one. The name "simvastatin" is derived from the chemical name of the drug, which is [1S,3R,7S,8S,8aR]-1,2,3,7,8,8a-hexahydro-3,7-dimethyl-8-[2-(tetrahydro-4-hydroxy-6-oxo-2H-pyran-2-yl)ethyl]-1-naphthalenyl 2,2-dimethylbutanoate.
Usage
Ezetimibe/simvastatin is used to treat high cholesterol, along with a proper diet. It helps to reduce the amount of cholesterol that the body absorbs from the diet, and also reduces the amount of cholesterol that the body produces. This can help to prevent the build-up of cholesterol in the arteries, which can lead to heart disease and stroke.
