Chattooga County is a county located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 24,965. The county seat is Summerville.

History

Chattooga County was created on December 28, 1838, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly. It was formed from parts of Floyd and Walker counties. The county is named after the Chattooga River, which flows through the area.

The area was originally inhabited by the Cherokee people before their forced removal during the Trail of Tears. European-American settlers began to move into the area in the early 19th century.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 314 square miles (810 km²), of which 313 square miles (810 km²) is land and 1.0 square mile (2.6 km²) (0.3%) is water.

The county is part of the Appalachian region, characterized by its rolling hills and valleys. The Chattooga River is a significant waterway in the county.

Demographics

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 24,965 people, 9,500 households, and 6,500 families residing in the county. The population density was approximately 80 people per square mile.

The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with a significant African American minority and smaller percentages of other races.

Economy

The economy of Chattooga County is diverse, with agriculture, manufacturing, and retail trade being significant sectors. Historically, the county has been known for its textile industry, although this has declined in recent years.
