Evans County, Georgia[edit]

Evans County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was approximately 10,000. The county seat is Claxton.

History[edit]

Evans County was created on August 11, 1914, from portions of Bulloch and Tattnall counties. It was named after Clement A. Evans, a Confederate general in the American Civil War.

Geography[edit]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 187 square miles (480 km²), of which 183 square miles (470 km²) is land and 4.0 square miles (10 km²) (2.1%) is water.

As of the 2020 United States census, there were approximately 10,000 people, 3,500 households, and 2,500 families residing in the county. The population density was 55 people per square mile (21/km²).

The economy of Evans County is primarily based on agriculture, with major crops including peanuts, cotton, and corn. The county is also known for its poultry production.
