Coffee County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 43,062. The county seat is Douglas.

History[edit]

Coffee County was created on February 9, 1854, from portions of Telfair, Irwin, Clinch, and Ware counties. It was named after General John E. Coffee, a state legislator and a U.S. Congressman.

Geography[edit]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 603 square miles (1,560 km²), of which 575 square miles (1,490 km²) is land and 28 square miles (73 km²) (4.6%) is water.

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 43,062 people, 15,000 households, and 10,000 families residing in the county. The racial makeup of the county was diverse, with a significant portion of the population identifying as Hispanic or Latino.

The economy of Coffee County is diverse, with agriculture, manufacturing, and retail trade being significant sectors. The county is known for its production of tobacco, peanuts, and cotton.

Education[edit]

Coffee County is served by the Coffee County School District, which includes several elementary, middle, and high schools. The county is also home to South Georgia State College, which offers a range of undergraduate programs.

Transportation[edit]

Major highways that pass through Coffee County include U.S. Route 441, U.S. Route 221, and Georgia State Route 32. The Douglas Municipal Airport provides air service to the region.
