Jones County, Georgia is a county located in the central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 28,735. The county seat is Gray. Jones County is included in the Macon Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Jones County was created on December 10, 1807, from Baldwin County and named in honor of James Jones, an early Georgia lawyer and Congressman. The county is noted for its role during the American Civil War, particularly for the Clinton Confederate Hospital which served thousands of soldiers from both the Confederate and Union sides.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 395 square miles, of which 394 square miles is land and 1.4 square miles (0.4%) is water.
