Murray County, Georgia is a county located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 40,096. The county seat is Chatsworth. Murray County is part of the Dalton, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Murray County was established on December 3, 1832, from portions of Cherokee County. It was named after Thomas W. Murray, a prominent early settler and Georgia legislator. The county has a rich history, including its role in the Trail of Tears, the forced relocation of the Cherokee people from Georgia to Oklahoma.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 347 square miles, of which 344 square miles is land and 2.6 square miles (0.7%) is water. The county is predominantly mountainous, with the Cohutta Mountains and part of the Chattahoochee National Forest located within its boundaries. The Conasauga River, which is part of the Tennessee River watershed, flows through the county.
