Clayton County, Georgia is a county located in the north central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 292,256. The county seat is Jonesboro, and the largest city is Forest Park. Clayton County is part of the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Atlanta-Athens-Clarke County-Sandy Springs, GA Combined Statistical Area.

History[edit]

Clayton County was established in 1858 and was named in honor of Augustin Smith Clayton, a prominent jurist and congressman from Georgia. The county has a rich history, with significant developments during the American Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. It was one of the original counties affected by the Battle of Jonesboro, which played a crucial role in the Union's Atlanta Campaign.

Geography[edit]

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 144 square miles, of which 142 square miles is land and 2.8 square miles (1.9%) is water. Clayton County is bordered by the Fulton, Henry, Spalding, and DeKalb counties.
