The county seat is Jonesboro, and the largest city is Forest Park. Clayton County is part of the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Atlanta-Athens-Clarke County-Sandy Springs, GA Combined Statistical Area.

History

Clayton County was established in 1858 and was named in honor of Augustin Smith Clayton, a prominent jurist and congressman from Georgia.
