Dooly County, Georgia[edit]

Dooly County is a county located in the central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 11,208. The county seat is Vienna.

History[edit]

Dooly County was created on May 15, 1821, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly. It was named after Colonel John Dooly, a prominent figure in the American Revolutionary War. The county was one of the original land lottery counties in Georgia, formed from land ceded by the Creek Nation in the Treaty of Indian Springs.

Geography[edit]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 397 square miles (1,030 km²), of which 392 square miles (1,020 km²) is land and 5.2 square miles (13 km²) (1.3%) is water.

Demographics[edit]

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 11,208 people, 4,123 households, and 2,789 families residing in the county. The racial makeup of the county was 50.2% Black or African American, 45.3% White, 0.2% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.5% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.8% of the population.

Economy[edit]

The economy of Dooly County is primarily based on agriculture, with major crops including cotton, peanuts, and corn. The county is also known for its pecan production. In recent years, there has been a focus on diversifying the local economy to include more industrial and service-based businesses.

Education[edit]

Dooly County is served by the Dooly County School District, which includes Dooly County High School, Dooly County Middle School, and Dooly County Elementary School. The county is also home to several private educational institutions.
