Gordon County, Georgia

Gordon County is a county located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 57,544. The county seat is Calhoun.

History

Gordon County was created on February 13, 1850, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly. It was named after William Washington Gordon, the first president of the Central of Georgia Railway.

The area that is now Gordon County was originally inhabited by the Cherokee people. The county was part of the Cherokee Nation until the Indian Removal Act led to the Trail of Tears.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 358 square miles (930 km²), of which 356 square miles (920 km²) is land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²) (0.6%) is water.

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 57,544 people, 20,123 households, and 14,678 families residing in the county. The racial makeup of the county was 80.1% White, 4.5% Black or African American, 1.0% Native American, 1.0% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 9.8% from other races, and 3.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 16.5% of the population.

Economy

Gordon County's economy is diverse, with manufacturing, agriculture, and retail trade being significant sectors. The county is part of the Carpet Capital of the World, with many residents employed in the carpet and flooring industry.

Education

Gordon County is served by the Gordon County School District and the Calhoun City School District. The county is home to several elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as the Georgia Northwestern Technical College.

Transportation

Major highways in Gordon County include Interstate 75, U.S. Route 41, and U.S. Route 411. The county is also served by the Calhoun-Gordon County Airport.
