Fayette County, Georgia

Fayette County is a county located in the north central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 119,194. The county seat is Fayetteville. Fayette County is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area.

History

Fayette County was established on May 15, 1821, and was named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French aristocrat and military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The county was created from land ceded by the Creek people in the Treaty of Indian Springs.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 199 square miles (520 km²), of which 194 square miles (500 km²) is land and 5.2 square miles (13 km²) (2.6%) is water.

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 119,194 people, 42,304 households, and 33,456 families residing in the county. The racial makeup of the county was 60.4% White, 29.4% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 4.1% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.5% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.8% of the population.

Fayette County is served by the Fayette County School District, which operates public schools in the area. The district includes several elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as alternative education programs.

The economy of Fayette County is diverse, with sectors including retail, healthcare, education, and manufacturing. The county's proximity to Atlanta provides residents with access to a wide range of employment opportunities.
