Harris County, Georgia is a county located in the west-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was approximately 35,000. The county seat is Hamilton, and its largest city is Pine Mountain, known for the famous Callaway Gardens, a family resort, and F.D. Roosevelt State Park, the largest state park in Georgia.
History
Harris County was created on December 14, 1827, from portions of Muscogee and Troup Counties. It was named in honor of Charles Harris, a prominent attorney from Savannah. The county played a significant role during the American Civil War, providing men and resources to the Confederate cause.
Geography
Covering an area of approximately 473 square miles, Harris County is characterized by its rolling hills and abundant waterways, including part of the Chattahoochee River that forms its western boundary with Alabama.
