La Luna is a 2011 computer-animated short film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film was directed and written by Enrico Casarosa and features music by Michael Giacchino. It premiered on June 6, 2011, at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France.

Plot

The story follows a young boy named Bambino who is taken out to sea late at night by his father and grandfather. They row to a spot in the middle of the ocean and wait for the moon to rise. When it does, they set up a ladder and Bambino climbs to the top, discovering that the moon is covered in glowing stars. The boy learns the family tradition of sweeping fallen stars off the moon's surface, each family member using a different tool. Through this experience, Bambino finds his own way of doing things, blending the methods of his father and grandfather.

Production

La Luna was directed by Enrico Casarosa, who also wrote the screenplay. The film was produced by Kevin Reher and features a musical score by Michael Giacchino. The animation style was inspired by Hayao Miyazaki and Albert Lamorisse's The Red Balloon. Casarosa drew from his own childhood experiences and his Italian heritage in creating the story and characters.

Reception

La Luna received critical acclaim for its animation, storytelling, and emotional depth. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 84th Academy Awards and won several other awards at various film festivals.
