Piper is a 2016 American computer-animated short film produced by Pixar Animation Studios. It was directed by Alan Barillaro and premiered on June 17, 2016, before the feature film Finding Dory. The short film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 89th Academy Awards.

Plot

The story follows a young sandpiper named Piper who is learning to overcome her fear of the ocean. Encouraged by her mother, Piper ventures out of her nest to forage for food along the shoreline. After a wave knocks her over, she becomes frightened of the water. However, with the help of a hermit crab, Piper learns to face her fears and discovers the beauty and bounty of the ocean.

Production

Piper was directed by Alan Barillaro, who had been working at Pixar for over 20 years. The idea for the short came from Barillaro's observations of sandpipers on the beach near his home. The film was produced using advanced animation techniques to realistically depict the movement of the birds and the ocean waves.

Reception

Piper received widespread acclaim for its animation quality, storytelling, and emotional depth. Critics praised the film for its realistic animation and heartwarming narrative. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film and several other awards at various film festivals.
