Monsters University

Monsters University is a 2013 American 3D computer-animated comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. It was directed by Dan Scanlon and produced by Kori Rae, with John Lasseter, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich as executive producers. The music for the film was composed by Randy Newman, making it his seventh collaboration with Pixar.

Plot

Monsters University is a prequel to Pixar's 2001 film Monsters, Inc.. The film tells the story of two monsters, James P. "Sulley" Sullivan and Mike Wazowski, and their time at college, where they start off as rivals but soon become best friends.

Characters

The film features the voices of Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Helen Mirren, Peter Sohn, Joel Murray, Sean Hayes, Dave Foley, Charlie Day and Alfred Molina.

Release

Monsters University premiered on June 5, 2013 at the BFI Southbank in London, England, and was released in the United States on June 21, 2013. It was accompanied in theaters by a short film, The Blue Umbrella, directed by Saschka Unseld.

Reception

The film received positive reviews from critics and was a box office success, grossing over $743 million worldwide against its estimated budget of $200 million.

Sequel

A sequel, Monsters at Work, was released on Disney+ in 2021.
