Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is a eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of eating large quantities of food (often very quickly and to the point of discomfort); a feeling of a loss of control during the binge; experiencing shame, distress or guilt afterwards; and not regularly using unhealthy compensatory measures (e.g., purging) to counter the binge eating.

Pronunciation

Binge Eating Disorder: /bɪndʒ iːtɪŋ dɪsˈɔːrdər/

Etymology

The term "binge" originates from the Old English binge, meaning "to soak". The term "eating" is derived from the Old English etan, meaning "to eat". The term "disorder" comes from the Latin dis, meaning "apart", and ordo, meaning "order". Thus, Binge Eating Disorder refers to a condition where eating is out of order or control.
