Jakarta is the capital city and the largest city of Indonesia. It is located on the northwest coast of the world's most populous island, Java. Jakarta is the center of economics, culture and politics of Indonesia, with a population of 10,770,487 as of 2020.

History

Jakarta has been home to multiple settlements. It was known as Sunda Kelapa during the Kingdom of Sunda period, Jayakarta during the short period of the Banten Sultanate, then Batavia under Dutch colonial rule, and Djakarta or Djakarta Raya during the short period of the Soekarno era, until its current name was officially adopted on 17 August 1972.

Geography

Jakarta is located on the northwest coast of Java, at the mouth of the Ciliwung River on Jakarta Bay, which is an inlet of the Java Sea. The northern part of Jakarta is plain land, some areas of which are below sea level and subject to frequent flooding. The southern parts of the city are hilly.

Economy

Jakarta is an important economic hub. It has a diverse economy in which the service sector dominates. It is the seat of the Indonesia Stock Exchange and numerous multinational corporations.

Culture

Jakarta is a melting pot of cultures, with influences from the many ethnic groups that make up Indonesia. It is known for its vibrant arts scene, including music, dance, and theater.

Transportation

Jakarta is served by two international airports, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, and a major seaport, Tanjung Priok. It also has an extensive system of roads and railways.

Education

Jakarta is home to numerous universities, including the University of Indonesia and Jakarta State University.

Health

Jakarta has a range of healthcare facilities, including public and private hospitals. The city's health department oversees health service delivery.
