Jakarta (pronunciation: /dʒəˈkɑːrtə/) is the capital city of Indonesia, and one of the most populous urban areas in the world.

Etymology

The name "Jakarta" was adopted as a short form of "Jayakarta", a Sundanese term meaning "victorious deed" or "complete act". The name was given by Prince Fatahillah, a prince from the Sultanate of Demak, after he successfully conquered the area in 1527.
