Richmond County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 206,607. The county seat is Augusta, which is also the largest city in the county. Richmond County is part of the Augusta-Richmond County consolidated city-county.
History
Richmond County was created on February 5, 1777, as one of the original counties of Georgia. It was named after Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond, a British politician who was a supporter of the American colonies.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 329 square miles (850 km²), of which 324 square miles (840 km²) is land and 5.3 square miles (14 km²) (1.6%) is water.

As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 206,607 people, 79,366 households, and 49,303 families residing in the county. The population density was 637 people per square mile (246/km²).
Government and politics
Richmond County is governed by a consolidated government with the city of Augusta. The Augusta-Richmond County Commission is the legislative body, and the Mayor of Augusta serves as the executive.
Education
Richmond County is served by the Richmond County School System, which operates numerous elementary, middle, and high schools. Higher education institutions include Augusta University and Paine College.
