Ellagitannin
Ellagitannin is a type of hydrolyzable tannin, a class of polyphenols. These complex chemical compounds are found in a variety of plant species and contribute to their color, taste, and health benefits.
Chemical Structure
Ellagitannins are large molecules formed by the binding of ellagic acid to a sugar molecule. The ellagic acid is usually bound to the sugar molecule through an ester bond. The sugar component can be glucose, galactose, or another type of sugar. The exact structure of an ellagitannin molecule can vary depending on the plant species in which it is found.
Sources
Ellagitannins are found in a variety of plant species, including oak species, pomegranate, raspberries, strawberries, and walnuts. They are particularly abundant in the fruits, nuts, and bark of these plants.
Health Benefits
Ellagitannins have been studied for their potential health benefits. They are powerful antioxidants, which means they can neutralize harmful free radicals in the body. Some studies suggest that ellagitannins may also have anti-inflammatory properties, and may help to prevent certain types of cancer. However, more research is needed to fully understand the health benefits of ellagitannins.
