Chemical compound

1-Propanol, also known as n-propanol or n-propyl alcohol, is a primary alcohol with the chemical formula C₃H₈O. It is a colorless liquid with a mild, alcohol-like odor.

Production[edit]

1-Propanol is produced by the hydrogenation of propionaldehyde, which is derived from the hydroformylation of ethylene using carbon monoxide and hydrogen.

Uses[edit]

1-Propanol is used as a solvent in the pharmaceutical industry, for resins and cellulose esters, and in the manufacture of cosmetics and personal care products. It is also used as a disinfectant and in the production of propylene glycol.

Safety[edit]

1-Propanol is flammable and should be handled with care. It can cause irritation to the eyes and respiratory system. Prolonged exposure may lead to central nervous system depression.
