1-Pentanol, also known as n-pentyl alcohol or pentan-1-ol, is a primary alcohol with the chemical formula C5H12O. It is one of the isomers of pentanol, which are alcohols with five carbon atoms.

Structure and properties

1-Pentanol is a linear chain alcohol with the hydroxyl group (-OH) attached to the first carbon atom in the chain. This structure is reflected in its IUPAC name, pentan-1-ol. The molecular structure can be represented in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms.

1-Pentanol is a colorless liquid with a characteristic alcoholic odor. It is miscible with many organic solvents and is slightly soluble in water.

Production

1-Pentanol can be produced by the hydroformylation of butene followed by hydrogenation of the resulting aldehyde. It can also be synthesized through the fermentation of sugars by certain microorganisms.

Applications

1-Pentanol is used as a solvent in the manufacture of varnishes and paints. It is also used in the production of esters for artificial flavoring and fragrances. Additionally, 1-pentanol is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemical compounds.
