Family violence (pronunciation: /ˈfæmɪli ˈvaɪələns/), also known as domestic violence, is a pattern of abusive behaviors by one or both partners in an intimate relationship such as marriage, dating, family, or cohabitation.

Etymology

The term "family violence" is derived from the Latin words "familia" meaning family, and "violentia" meaning violence. It was first used in the late 20th century to describe violent acts between family members.

Definition

Family violence is defined as any violent or aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving the violent abuse of a spouse or partner. This can encompass, but is not limited to, physical, psychological, and sexual abuse.

Types of Family Violence

  • Physical abuse - This involves physical aggression or force resulting in injury. It includes hitting, slapping, punching, choking, pushing, and other types of contact that result in physical injury to the victim.
  • Psychological abuse - This involves emotional abuse, such as yelling, humiliation, controlling behavior, and the denial of the victim's reality.
  • Sexual abuse - This involves any forced or coerced sexual act or behavior. It includes rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment.
