Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (kɒmplɪˈmɛntəri ənd ɔːlˈtɜːrnətɪv ˈmɛdɪsɪn) often referred to as CAM, is a broad domain of healing resources that encompasses all health systems, modalities, and practices and their accompanying theories and beliefs, other than those intrinsic to the politically dominant health system of a particular society or culture in a given historical period.
Etymology
The term "Complementary and Alternative Medicine" is relatively recent and was coined in the late 20th century as a means of distinguishing these practices from mainstream medicine. "Complementary" refers to the use of these practices in conjunction with conventional medicine, while "alternative" refers to their use in place of conventional medicine.
Types of Complementary and Alternative Medicine
CAM includes such resources perceived by their users as associated with positive health outcomes. CAM is often divided into two main categories: natural products and mind and body practices.
- Natural Products include a variety of items such as herbs (also known as botanicals), vitamins and minerals, and probiotics. They are widely marketed, readily available to consumers, and often sold as dietary supplements.
- Mind and Body Practices include a large and diverse group of procedures or techniques administered or taught by a trained practitioner or teacher. Examples include Yoga, Chiropractic and Osteopathic Medicine, Meditation, and Acupuncture.
Usage and Popularity
CAM is widely used around the world, and its popularity continues to grow. It is estimated that approximately 38% of adults in the United States and 12% of children are using some form of CAM.
