Mehmet Oz
Mehmet Oz (also known as Dr. Oz) is a cardiothoracic surgeon, television personality, and author best known for his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show and his own program, The Dr. Oz Show.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Mehmet Oz was born on June 11, 1960, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Turkish parents. He received his undergraduate degree in biology from Harvard University in 1982. He then earned his MD and MBA degrees, respectively, from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Wharton Business School in 1986.
Career[edit]
Oz began his medical career as a professor at the Columbia University Department of Surgery in 2001. He also served as the director of the Cardiovascular Institute and Complementary Medicine Program at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. His research interests include heart valve repair, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, and healthcare policy.
In 2004, Oz began appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show, where he gained fame for his approachable style and focus on personal health. This led to the creation of The Dr. Oz Show, which premiered in 2009. The show covers a wide range of health and wellness topics, often featuring celebrity guests.
Oz has also authored and co-authored several books, including "YOU: The Owner's Manual" series. His work has been translated into multiple languages and has sold millions of copies worldwide.
Controversies[edit]
Despite his popularity, Oz has faced criticism from some in the medical community for promoting unproven treatments and therapies on his show. In 2014, he was called before a United States Senate subcommittee to testify about the marketing of weight-loss products on his show.
Personal Life[edit]
Oz is married to author and television host Lisa Oz. They have four children together.
Awards and Honors[edit]
Oz has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to medicine and media, including Emmy Awards for Outstanding Talk Show Host and Outstanding Informative Talk Show.
