Reiki
Reiki
Reiki (pronounced /ˈreɪkiː/) is a form of alternative therapy commonly referred to as energy healing. It emerged in Japan in the late 1800s and is said to involve the transfer of universal energy from the practitioner's palms to their patient.
Etymology
The term Reiki is derived from the Japanese words "rei" (universal) and "ki" (life energy). Reiki is considered a type of energy healing.
History
Reiki was developed by a Japanese Buddhist named Mikao Usui, who taught his method of healing to over 2,000 people during his lifetime. After his death, his students continued his teachings, spreading Reiki to the United States and eventually worldwide.
Practice
In a standard treatment, Reiki energy flows from the practitioner's hands into the client. The client is usually laying on a massage table but treatments can also be given while the client is seated or even standing. The client remains fully clothed. The practitioner places their hands on or near the client's body in a series of hand positions. These include positions around the head and shoulders, the stomach, and feet.
