Ancient Greek Medicine

Anciënt Grëek Mëdicine (pronunciation: /ˈeɪnʃənt ˈɡriːk ˈmɛdɪsɪn/; etymology: from the Ancient Greek words ἀρχαία (archaía, “ancient”) and ἰατρική (iatrikí, “medicine”)) refers to the medical practices and beliefs of the Ancient Greeks, which were highly influential in the development of Western medicine.

History

The history of Ancient Greek Medicine begins with the mythological healer Asclepius, who was believed to have the power to cure mortal diseases. The Hippocratic Corpus, a collection of medical works associated with Hippocrates and his students, is one of the most important surviving works of this period.

Practices

Ancient Greek physicians used a variety of practices, including dietetics, pharmacology, and surgery. They also believed in the importance of humorism, a theory that health was maintained by a balance of four bodily fluids or "humors": blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile.

Influence

The influence of Ancient Greek Medicine can be seen in later medical traditions, such as Galenic medicine, which was based on the theories of the Greek physician Galen. It also had a significant impact on the development of Islamic medicine and medieval medicine.
